The Rising Cost of Dissent in America | Miles Taylor | TED

News Main Image

Miles Taylor is a former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) chief of staff who served in the first Trump administration and later gained public prominence as an outspoken internal critic of the president. [1, 2]

He was thrust back into the spotlight following actions taken by Donald Trump after returning to the White House. [1]

What He is Accused Of

The White House and Donald Trump issued an executive directive accusing Taylor of illegal conduct, specifically alleging that he: [1, 2]

  • Illegally published classified conversations to sell his book under the pseudonym "Anonymous."
  • Disseminated sensitive information obtained through unauthorized methods.
  • Potentially engaged in treasonous behavior by attempting to undermine a sitting president. [1, 2]

Taylor's Response

Taylor has categorically denied these allegations, asserting that he never shared classified information outside of proper channels. He has maintained that his previous critiques of the president's actions were exercises of free speech. [1, 2]

Following orders to investigate him and revoke his security clearance, Taylor and his legal team formally petitioned the inspectors general at the Department of Justice and DHS to investigate the directives, arguing they constitute an unconstitutional retaliation and a "scary precedent" targeting private citizens for political dissent. [1, 2, 3]

Miles Taylor has not been convicted of any illegal acts, nor has he been formally charged with a crime. [1, 2]

The claims that he did something illegal come entirely from a presidential memorandum issued by Donald Trump. The administration ordered federal agencies to investigate Taylor for specific actions they claim violated the law. [1, 2, 3, 4]
